Channel Successors

A channel successor is the person who will become the new founder of a channel if the current founder(s) lose their NickServ account. This can occur if the founder is inactive for 365 days or removes their account.

You can see who the successor of a channel is by looking up the channel’s info with this command:

/msg ChanServ info <#channel>

For example, to view the info for the #coffee channel:

/msg ChanServ info #coffee

The result will look something like this:

-ChanServ- Information on #coffee:
-ChanServ- Founder    : jess
-ChanServ- Successor  : Dianora
-ChanServ- Registered : Apr 27 08:54:42 2023 +0100 (4 weeks, 1 days, 3 hours ago)
-ChanServ- Mode lock  : +nt-lk
-ChanServ- Flags      : Secure, KeepTopic, Fantasy
-ChanServ- Prefix     : ! (Default)
-ChanServ- *** End of Info ***

In this example, Dianora will become the founder if jess's account is removed.

Key Points

  • If a channel has two founders, the successor only becomes the new founder if both founders are removed.
  • If the current founder drops (unregisters) the channel, the successor is not made the new founder. Instead, the channel and all access will be completely removed.

Who is Chosen as the Channel Successor?

The channel successor is the person who, apart from the current founder(s), has the most access on the channel. You can view access and flags by running:

/msg ChanServ flags <#channel>

Example

Here is a sample channel flags list:

-ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
-ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
-ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOefiorstv
-ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOeiortv
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.

In this example, Jalapenio is the current founder and Mouring is the successor because Mouring has more flags than all other people.

Even if the successor has limited access, they can still be chosen if they have the most access.

Example

-ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
-ChanServ- 2 Luyer +i
-ChanServ- 3 Mouring +iv
-ChanServ- 4 Brando +AViv
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #Giggles FLAGS listing.

Brando will be the successor because he has the most access.

If Multiple Successors Have the Same Access

If multiple candidates have the same access, the one with the +S-flag is chosen as the successor. Only one person can have the +S-flag at a time.

You can assign the +S-flag with:

/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S

If someone already has the flag, assigning it to another person will remove the flag from the first person.

Example

-ChanServ- Entry Nickname/Host Flags
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- 1 Jalapenio +AFORefiorstv
-ChanServ- 2 Luyer +AOeiortv
-ChanServ- 3 Mouring +AOefiorstv
-ChanServ- 4 Brando +AOefiorstv
-ChanServ- ----- ------------- -----
-ChanServ- End of #chatzone FLAGS listing.

In this example, Brando will be the successor because of the +S-flag.

Changing the Channel Successor

To change the successor, follow these steps:

Step 1: Ensure the person has the most access

You can give the person full access using +*:

/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +*

Step 2: Give the +S-flag

To make them the successor, give them the +S-flag:

/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S

Step 3: Check

Verify the change by viewing the channel info:

/msg ChanServ info <#channel>

Summary for Changing Successor

  1. Give the person the most access (e.g. full access):
/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +*
  1. Give the person the +S-flag:
/msg ChanServ flags <#channel> <nickname> +S
  1. Verify the change:
/msg ChanServ info <#channel>
