Requesting a vHost

A vHost (virtual host) is used to mask your real IP address or hostname, providing you with greater privacy while using HybridIRC.

HybridIRC offers free custom vHosts for registered users, tied to your NickServ account. Once set, your vHost will automatically be activated and visible every time you identify to your account on IRC.

How to Request a vHost

To request a vHost, use the following command:

/msg HostServ REQUEST <your.desired.vhost>

Example:

/msg HostServ REQUEST lord.bacon.cheeseburger

After submitting your request, if your nickname is registered, one of our staff members will review it. You will then receive a memo notifying you of the approval or rejection of your request.

Available vHosts

To view a list of available vHosts, use the command:

/msg HostServ OFFERLIST

If you want to take one of the offered vHosts, use:

/msg HostServ TAKE hybridirc.users.$account

vHost Rules

By requesting and using a vHost, you agree to the following rules. Violating any of these rules may result in the removal of your vHost privileges. In such a case, you will still be able to use the default HybridIRC vHost: hybridirc.users.$account.

vHost Rejection Reasons

Please ensure your vHost request follows the guidelines below to avoid rejection. Here are common reasons why a vHost request may be denied:

  • A vHost cannot contain a domain name or IP address (e.g., ".com", ".net", ".org", ".co", or "192.168.0.1").
  • A vHost must contain at least one period (`.`).
  • Special characters are not allowed in a vHost (e.g., `_`, `-`, `()`, `^`, `<`, `>`, `{}`, `[]`).
  • A vHost must include at least one letter.
  • A vHost cannot contain consecutive periods (`..`).
  • A vHost cannot end with a period (`.`).

Terms and Conditions

  • Vhosts may only be changed once every 30 days.
  • Vhosts deemed as a threat to the network or used maliciously will be rejected.
  • Vhosts with offensive, profane, or discriminatory content (e.g., racism, sexism, or abuse) will not be permitted.
  • Trademarked names (e.g., "microsoft.com") are prohibited.
  • Vhosts cannot be used to evade channel bans.
  • Staff-related vHosts are not allowed.
  • Using another person’s account, nickname, or identity as your vHost is strictly prohibited.
  • Vhosts cannot include a top-level domain (TLD) (e.g., .com, .org, .net).
  • Special characters are not allowed in vHosts (e.g., `_`, `-`, `()`, `^`, `<>`, `{}`).
  • Vhosts that are already in use cannot be requested. If your vHost matches your nickname, identify to your account or choose an available vHost.
  • HybridIRC reserves the right to deny any vHost request for any reason.

How Does It Work?

When you set a vHost for your nickname, it becomes linked to your NickServ account. Each time you identify to NickServ using your password, your vHost will be automatically activated and appear as your visible hostname on the network, replacing your real IP address or the generic server hostname. This ensures privacy and a more personalized IRC experience.

If you need to change your vHost or encounter any issues, you can request a new one using the `/msg HostServ request` command. Be sure to follow the vHost rules and guidelines to avoid rejection.
