Requesting a vHost

A vHost is a virtual host used to mask your proper IP address or hostname.

HybridIRC offers users free custom vhosts, which are tied to your NickServ account. Your vHost will only be active and visible once you authenticate to your account on IRC.

How to Request a vHost

To apply for a vhost, use the following command:

/msg HostServ REQUEST <your.desired.vhost>

Example:

/msg HostServ REQUEST lord.bacon.cheeseburger

Once your application is received, provided your nickname is registered, one of our staff members will review it. You will receive a memo advising you of the approval or denial of your request.

Available VHosts

To view a list of available vhosts, use the command:

/msg HostServ OFFERLIST

To take an offered vHost for use:

/msg HostServ TAKE hybridirc.users.$account

vHost Rules

By signing up for a vhost, you agree to the following rules. Violation of these rules may result in the removal of your vHost privileges. If this happens, you may still use the default vHost provided by HybridIRC: hybridirc.users.$account.

VHost Rejection Reasons

The following are common reasons why a vHost request may be rejected. Please review these guidelines before submitting your request:

• A vHost must not contain a domain name or IP address (e.g., ".com", ".net", ".org", ".co", or "192.168.0.1").
• A vHost must contain at least one period (`.`).
• A vHost must not contain special characters (e.g., `_`, `-`, `()`, `^`, `<`, `>`, `{}`, `[]`).
• A vHost must contain at least one letter.
• A vHost cannot contain consecutive periods (`..`).
• A vHost cannot end with a period (`.`).

Terms and Conditions

• Vhosts may only be changed once every 30 days.
• Vhosts deemed as a threat to the network will be rejected.
• Vhosts in poor taste, including those that are profane, offensive, or discriminatory, will not be allowed.
• Trademarked names (e.g., "microsoft.com") cannot be used.
• Vhosts cannot be used to evade channel bans.
• Staff-related vhosts are prohibited.
• Using another person’s account, nickname, or identity in a vHost is strictly forbidden.
• Vhosts cannot include a top-level domain (TLD) (e.g., .com, .org, .net).
• Special characters are not allowed in vHosts (e.g., `_`, `-`, `()`, `^`, `<>`, `{}`).
• Vhosts that are already in use cannot be requested. If the vHost matches your nickname, identify to your account or choose an available vHost.

• HybridIRC reserves the right to deny any vHost request for any reason.

How Does It Work?

When you set a vHost for your nickname, it is automatically linked to your account. Every time you successfully identify to NickServ using your password, the vHost you’ve set will be activated. This means your vHost will appear as your visible hostname on the network, replacing your real IP address or the generic server hostname. This provides privacy and a more personalized presence while connected to HybridIRC.

If you ever need to change your vHost or encounter any issues with it, you can request a new one via the `/msg HostServ request` command. Just ensure that your new vHost meets all the terms and conditions outlined in the rules.
