Nickname Registration

Welcome to HybridIRC's Nickname Registration guide! Registering a nickname is completely FREE. By registering your nickname, you ensure that no one else on the network can use it. This registration process safeguards your identity and unlocks additional features. Please note that if your nickname remains unused for one year, it will expire and become available for others to register. Any associated channel access or ownership will be lost or transferred to the first designated successor (if one exists).

Steps to Register a Nickname

Change to the Nickname You Want to Use

Before registering, ensure you are using the nickname you wish to register. To change your current nickname, use the following command:

/nick <desired_nickname>

Example:

/nick MyNickname

Note: If the nickname you choose is already registered, you will receive a notification like:

You have 60 seconds to identify to your nickname before it is changed.

In this case:

- If this is your nickname and you remember the password, use the following command to identify yourself:

/msg NickServ identify <password>

- If this is your nickname but you have forgotten the password, use the following command to request a password reset:

/msg NickServ sendpass <nickname>
 Check the email associated with your nickname for further instructions.

- If this is not your nickname, you will need to change to a different nickname using the same /nick command.

Register Your Nickname

Once you are using the desired nickname, register it with the following command:

/msg NickServ register <password> <e-mail>

Example:

/msg NickServ register MyS3cureP@ssword myemail@example.com

Verify Your Email Address

Complete the registration by following the instructions sent to your email from HybridIRC Network Services.

Important:

  • Check your spam or junk folder if the activation email doesn’t appear in your inbox.
  • Mark the email as "Not spam/junk" if necessary.
  • If verification is not completed within 24 hours, your nickname will be released and become available for others to register.

Incorrect Email Address

If you entered the wrong email address, you can cancel the registration and start over using the DROP command:

/msg NickServ drop <nickname> <password>

Example:

/msg NickServ drop Dave I3C00ki3SWch0co1aTe

What if I Can’t Register a Nickname?

If you're unable to register your nickname due to device limitations or other issues, you can email us at support@hybridirc.com with the following details:

  • Your desired nickname.
  • Ensure the email is sent from the address you want associated with the nickname.

Important Notes

  • The email address you provide:
 * Must not already be linked to another account.
 * Must not be a disposable or temporary email address.
   * Temporary email addresses can expire, making it impossible to recover your nickname's password if forgotten.

Please allow up to 24 hours for your registration request to be processed and confirmed. Once approved, our team will respond to your email request with further instructions to complete the registration process.

For further assistance, join our #Help channel on IRC.

Temporary Nickname Registration

When you first register a nickname, it is temporarily reserved until your email address is verified. If you do not complete the email verification process within 24 hours, the nickname registration will expire, and the nickname will become available for others to register.

Invalid Email Address

If you encounter an error message like:

"Sorry, we do not accept registrations with email addresses from that domain. Use another address."

or

"[email] is not a valid e-mail address."

This indicates that the provided email address does not meet the network’s requirements.

Why Does This Happen?

Your email address may be rejected for these reasons:

  1. Restricted Domain: The email domain you are using (e.g., disposable or temporary email services) is blocked for registrations.
  2. Invalid Format: Email addresses must follow the standard format (e.g., user@example.com) and may include:
  * Letters (a–z, A–Z)
  * Numbers (0–9)
  * Periods (.)
  * Hyphens (-)
  * Underscores (_)
  Ensure the email address includes an "@" symbol and a valid domain name (e.g., gmail.com).
  1. Typing Errors: Verify your email address has no mistakes, such as:
  * Missing characters (e.g., no "@" or domain name).
  * Extra spaces or prohibited special characters.

Example of Valid Emails:

  • john.doe@gmail.com
  • example-123@domain.co.uk

How to Fix This

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Use a Valid Email Address: Provide an email address from a recognized provider (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook).
  2. Avoid Restricted Domains: Do not use disposable or temporary email addresses, as they are not permitted.
  3. Double-Check for Typos: Review your email address for accuracy before submitting it.

Benefits of Nickname Registration

  • Protect your nickname from unauthorized use.
  • Send and receive offline messages or memos to/from registered users.
  • Upload an avatar via KiwiIRC to enhance your online identity.
  • Use one email address to manage multiple nicknames. You don’t need to register each nickname individually. Simply change to the desired nickname and use the following command to group them together:
/msg NickServ group
 This allows you to link up to 5 additional nicknames under a single registered account.
  • If you want to group additional nicknames but have already reached the 5 nickname limit, you’ll need to ungroup the undesired nickname first. Use the following command to ungroup a nickname:
/msg NickServ ungroup <nickname>
  • To find out which other nicknames you have linked to your account, use the following command:
/msg NickServ info <yournickname>
 This will display information about your registered nicknames.

Additional Notes

  • Nicknames are temporarily reserved after issuing the registration command. Finalization requires email verification.
  • Allow up to 15 minutes for the email to arrive. If it doesn’t, contact a network operator for assistance.
